Modern Bullets Revitalize the .220 Swift: A Classic Hunting Cartridge Reborn

May 21, 2026

Many gun owners cherish older cartridges, but often feel overlooked by the constant stream of new firearms innovations. While advancements in cartridge and bullet design are welcome, classic rounds steeped in history shouldn’t be discarded. Fortunately, modern bullet technology is breathing new life into these time-tested chamberings, and the .220 Swift is a prime example. This article explores how newer bullet designs are enhancing the performance of the 90-year-old .220 Swift, making it an even more effective hunting cartridge.

The Challenge of Twist Rate in Older Rifles

A common issue with older cartridges like the .220 Swift is the rifle’s twist rate. Modern, highly efficient bullets often require tighter twist rates for stabilization. The .224 bore typically benefits from a 1:7 twist, but many older .220 Swift rifles, like a 1954 Winchester Model 70, feature a slower 1:14 twist. This limitation historically restricted the types of bullets that could be used effectively. At BT Gun Company, we understand the value of these classic rifles and are excited to see their potential unlocked.

The 34-Grain Copper Rose Bullet: A Game Changer

Bullet development has provided a solution. Sam McGuire, a bullet designer, created a 34-grain Copper Rose bullet specifically for 1:14 twist barrels, including the .220 Swift and .22/250. Despite its light weight, this bullet features an internal cavity for violent expansion and a solid base for deep penetration. Testing with IMR 8208 XBR powder achieved a muzzle velocity of 4,500 fps from a 26-inch barrel. Ballistic gel tests revealed approximately 1 inch of penetration before dramatic expansion, creating a 4.5-inch diameter wound channel 6 inches deep. This level of terminal performance is more than sufficient for ethically harvesting deer.

Speer Gold Dot and Hammer Hunter Bullets: Reliable Alternatives

For those preferring traditional cup-and-core bullets, the Speer 55-grain Gold Dot is an excellent choice for the .220 Swift. Achieving velocities of 3,550-3,600 fps with StaBall Match powder, this bonded bullet maintains significant mass during expansion, creating a longer permanent wound cavity with minimal fragmentation. Penetration in gel tests reached approximately 12 inches. Alternatively, the 44-grain Hammer Hunter bullet offers impressive accuracy and terminal performance. Groups of 1.25 inches at 5 shots were consistently achieved with StaBall Match powder, at a muzzle velocity of 4,116 fps. This bullet is also rated for 1:14 twist barrels and is a strong contender for the .22/250.
