DVD2026: First Look at FN’s New ARKA Service Rifle

At the UK’s DVD 2026 defense expo held at Millbrook earlier this week, The Firearm Blog (TFB) was granted a first look at FN’s next-generation service rifle, the ARKA. Positioned as the direct replacement for the legendary SCAR platform, the ARKA arrived in June 2026 as FN’s latest evolution in 5.56x45mm NATO service rifles. The platform is significant because it marries the battle-tested short-stroke piston operating system and bolt design of the SCAR with the ergonomics and modularity of the AR-platform, addressing long-standing user feedback from the military and shooting community.

The ARKA is available in multiple configurations to suit diverse operational needs. The standard build features a 14.5-inch barrel paired with either a short or long M-LOK handguard, while the shorter carbine configuration uses an 11.25-inch close-quarter combat barrel with a matching short M-LOK handguard. All models are offered in Flat Dark Earth (FDE) or black finishes. The rifle showcased at DVD 2026 was the 14.5-inch variant with the shorter forend in FDE, which uniquely allows for bayonet mounting. Both handguard styles incorporate a large cutout designed for easy access to the adjustable gas block.

During handling, the editorial team was pleasantly surprised by the ARKA’s weight and balance. FN’s specifications list the unloaded carbine at approximately 3.7 kg (8.2 lb) and the standard rifle at around 3.9 kg (8.6 lb). In hand, the rifle did not feel nearly as heavy as the numbers suggest, thanks in part to its refined ergonomics. FN has integrated familiar AR-style controls, including a rear T-charging handle, ambidextrous bolt hold open/release, magazine release, and safety selector. The new M-LOK handguards are a marked improvement over the legacy SCAR’s Picatinny quad rails, being both lighter and more ergonomic. The rifle can accept any AR-compatible buttstock or pistol grip, with FN noting additional stock configurations are currently in development. A notable feature is the included AR-style forward assist, which can be swapped out for a simpler brass deflector piece. FN has optimized the platform for gas management during suppressed operation, ensuring compatibility with various suppressors.
