Pennsylvania Statewide Archery Deer Season Opens Oct. 3, 2026

By October 2, 2026

What’s New

Pennsylvania’s statewide archery deer hunting season opens Oct. 3, 2026, with expanded Sunday hunting and revised Chronic Wasting Disease regulations among the most important changes. The Pennsylvania Game Commission’s announcement also outlines harvest reporting, carcass-disposal requirements and safety reminders for hunters and other state game lands users.

This is a Pennsylvania announcement, not a Wisconsin hunting regulation. Hunters traveling from Wisconsin or another state should review Pennsylvania’s current rules before buying a hunting license or entering the field.

Key Dates and Rules

  • Statewide archery season: Oct. 3 through Nov. 20, 2026.
  • Late archery season: The season reopens Dec. 26, 2026, and continues through Jan. 24, 2027, after the regular firearms deer season.
  • Antlered limit: One antlered deer per license year.
  • Antlerless authorization: One antlerless deer may be harvested with each required license or permit.
  • Sunday hunting: For 2026-27, Sunday hunting is expanded to all Sundays falling within a season’s opening and closing dates, except during migratory game bird seasons.
  • Public-land access: Sunday hunting is open on all state game lands and state forests. Access remains limited in some state parks and state preserves, so hunters should verify the rules for the specific property they intend to use.
  • Harvest reports: Successful hunters can report online through HuntFishPA, by calling 1-800-838-4431 or by mailing the harvest report card included in the 2026-27 Hunting & Trapping Digest.

What Hunters and Shooters Should Know

The new statewide CWD rules change how hunters handle harvested deer. Transporting harvested deer, including high-risk parts, is no longer prohibited between locations. However, hunters statewide must use a commercial trash service to dispose of high-risk deer parts when a carcass is moved. Those parts may instead remain on the landscape at the harvest site.

The previous regulatory prohibition on cervid urine-based attractants in outdoor settings has also been removed. State law changed in 2025 to make those attractants legal. The Game Commission’s executive director additionally has discretionary authority to establish targeted county- or township-level restrictions on feeding deer and other wild cervids in response to CWD.

Free CWD testing remains available through head-collection bins in areas with detections, and hunters who submit a head can check results online. The agency reported four additional positive detections: captive-facility detections in Butler, Warren and Lycoming counties, plus a wild road-killed deer detected in Pringle Borough, Luzerne County.

Tree-stand users should inspect stands for broken or missing components before every use, select a living tree capable of supporting their weight and put on a full-body safety harness or belt before their feet leave the ground. Hunting with a partner, developing an emergency plan and carrying a whistle or another signaling device add practical safeguards.

The notice says non-hunters on state game lands must wear a fluorescent-orange hat or a combined 250 square inches of fluorescent orange on the head, chest and back. It prints the applicable period as Oct. 1, 2026, through Jan. 30, 2026, an apparent chronological inconsistency. Do not guess at the intended closing date; confirm it in the official 2026-27 digest before entering state game lands.

The announcement does not provide shooting-range access changes, fees or legal hunting hours. Range users and hunters should separately confirm property rules before traveling, then inspect general field gear and ammunition supplies without assuming that range rules and hunting regulations are interchangeable. Where to Confirm

Use the official HuntFishPA portal for licensing and online harvest reporting, and consult the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s 2026-27 Hunting & Trapping Digest for complete hunting license, fluorescent-orange, property-access and season requirements. Current agency regulations and posted property restrictions are the authority if a summary conflicts with them.
